American Legion Department of Iowa records, 1919-1976.

This collection includes minutes and proceedings of state Legion conventions (1921-1976), documents recounting the history of the organization, correspondence, membership materials including rosters, financial reports, convention programs, and miscellaneous pamphlets. Four volumes of scrapbooks in the collection contain press clippings (1919-1935). The collection also includes records from various local chapters of the Iowa Department of the American Legion including: Sioux Center Post #199; Walter Sayer Post #182 (Eldora); Mansell L. Phillips Post #509 (West Liberty); and Roy L. Chopek Post #17 (Iowa City). Some of the collection's materials relate to the American Legion Auxiliary and the 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux, a secret organization within the American Legion. J.A. Swisher wrote a history of the American Legion in Iowa which was published by the State Historical Society of Iowa in 1929. Questionnaires used in the research for this volume make up part of the collection.
